B I B L I O G R A P H Y and Recommended Reading
This comprehensive list is presented to you in a non-traditional and more useful style; that is, it is alphabetized by title rather than by author. The books are grouped and the groups are indexed for your searching convenience, but many titles could be (some have been) included in more than one category. I confess: there are a couple of books on this list that I have not read. Certain ones I read again and again.
I could not have accomplished the self-education necessary for the writing of this book and the building of this site, without the material listed here. I have awarded myself an honorary Masters Degree, and I thank all the authors and researchers herein for the education. OpinionSoup and OpinionSoup.com are my way of giving back, and some college or university should give me a Ph.D. That's my opinion, and it's very true.
Under "Miscellaneous" you will find books difficult to pigeonhole, and single entries in a "category."
NOTICE: You cannot click on the books. You will have to buy them, or visit your local library. What a revolutionary idea: READING BOOKS!

Personal from Donny:
Having loved betting of all kinds all my life, and having been a casino dealer and Pit Floor Supervisor for about five years, I know a great deal about gambling...and about gamblers.
The reason I am a loser, overall, is that I did not follow my own rules. I am a compulsive gambler, a hopeless case. There is no cure for the compulsive gambler.
Yes, I know how to win; yes, I am very good at these games. The problem? I can't quit when I'm ahead. I cannot manage my bankroll, which breaks the cardinal rule of successful gambling...Money Management.
I will never forget one particular day when I "just couldn't lose." I was winning thousands of dollars after a relatively short time, and 24 HOURS LATER, I left the casino, broke. How could I win $3,000 in a couple of hours, then leave LOSING all that AND the fifteen hundred I started with? Sickness. Compulsiveness. Not following the rules I set forth for you, here.
Once I had a pal who was so lucky, and so stupid...just like me. He would FREQUENTLY win a couple hundred bucks within about an hour, then "give it all back." Later he would always say he "broke even." This is foolishness. When you win money, IT IS YOURS. It is not "the casino's money"...you can leave with it and they won't stop you! If you "give it back," YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MONEY. You are not "even," just because you leave with the same amount you started with. Knowing this, is the #1 secret of Money Management. #2 is a firm Loss Limit.
If you find that you can't quit once you get started, don't go back. It will only get worse. If, however, you go to casinos for entertainment and can set a limit on losses and keep to it, OK for you.
The only solutions for a compulsive gambler like me, are (1) total abstinence, or (2) bankroll partners who will enforce the "Time to Quit!" rule. Don't try to use solution #2 with friends; it won't work...you'll lose your money AND your friends. Another drawback to #2 is that it makes you a known, professional gambler. This is a very bad idea for someone with a family. Gambling is not condusive to harmonious family relationships.
If you can go to the casinos "just for fun," here's how to win:
BLACKJACK (21): for Mary, my Teacher
- Believe this: the information I am giving you here, totally free, is more valuable than what can be found in several books and booklets costing a great deal of money.
Blackjack is my favorite casino table-game, dealt from a six or eight deck "shoe" or as Single-Deck or Double-Deck Pitch. If you are not familiar with Blackjack, let me disabuse you of the notion that the object of the game is to get as close to 21 as you can. The object of the game is to LET THE DEALER BUST!
In the following tables, the left side refers either to the total of your first two cards, or to specifically what cards they are. Notice the difference between how you should play a "hard hand" (10 & something) and a "soft hand" (Ace & something...you know that Aces are 1 or 11). The right side tells you what you should do, CONSIDERING BOTH YOUR HAND AND THE DEALER'S UP-CARD (referred to as "vs", for "versus"). NOTICE: these tables were lost. If you want to know more, email me.
The dealer's up-card is just as important to you as your own two cards. If you don't play your hand according to what the dealer is showing, you are just throwing your money away. And, you will piss off everyone else at the table when you do something stupid and make them lose, too.
You will be very lucky indeed to sit down at a Blackjack table where everyone is employing Basic Strategy, because in this rare instance everyone would be playing "for the table." Don't count on this ever happening. Very frequently, there is one asshole at the table who splits tens, hits hard seventeens, hits fourteen when the dealer is showing a six, or holds on soft seventeen...one bonehead move or another. A guy like this can make the whole table lose. Conversely and rarely, a guy like this can "change the cards" and make you win. That very thing happened to me, once. ONCE.
Don't ever lose your temper at the table with a person who is playing stupidly, and don't preach to him what he should have done. It creates a tension that is very disruptive. Just leave.
REMEMBER THAT BASIC STRATEGY IS BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE DEALER'S DOWN CARD IS A 10 OR FACE CARD, OR AN ACE.
If someone laughs at you for using Basic Strategy and says you should play Blackjack by "just going with your Gut Feeling," that person is either an idiot, or a pro who is "counting cards" and pretending to be an idiot. I leave open the possibility that some people might indeed have superior Gut Feelings, but how many clairvoyants do you know? I don't know any.
I, myself, am an accomplished Card-Counter. In fact, the casinos where I worked TAUGHT me how to count cards, so that I could catch people doing it. There is nothing wrong or illegal about Card-Counting, although all casinos say just the opposite. Card-Counters are ejected for made-up reasons. Privately they are told "We know you are counting; don't ever come back." The myth is that Card-Counters always win. They don't.
Personally, I find it to be a stressful waste of time, far more trouble than it is worth. "Card-Counting" is a misnomer, in a way, because it does not actually involve counting cards (except Aces). It is a mathematical system that assigns point values to the cards that have been dealt..."plus" values to low cards and "minus" values to high cards. I use +1 for 2-5, -1 for 10s and faces, and ignore 6-9. Aces I just remember (if the dealer announces "Last Hand," meaning she's going to reshuffle after this hand, and there are still Aces out, bet a little more). You must keep a "running count" in your head until the cards are reshuffled. The idea is to increase your bet when the count is high, and to decrease your bet when the count is low. In other words, when the count is high, a lot of low cards have been dealt and good ones should be coming. You also use this system to know whether to Hit or not.
Here is the reality: many times I have been playing at a section where the Pit Floor Supervisor was a friend of mine. He would be hanging by my table doing his Supervisor thing, being charming, and he would know by my careful observance of the cards that I was counting. We might even have attended the same Card-Counting seminar. Seeing me triple my bet (and not really caring), he might laugh and say "What's the count, Don?"
"Plus seven," I might reply. Then we would both die laughing as I was dealt a sixteen and the dealer turned over a face card. Still, Counting would tell me to Stand on that sixteen (whereas Basic Strategy would be to Hit), because the probability at that moment would be very high that a Hit would bust me, and the dealer MIGHT have to Hit. He MIGHT have a low card under that face, you see, and I wouldn't want to take his bust card. In other words, if I hit my sixteen and drew a face to bust, and then he had a low card under that face and had to hit, the whole table would piss and moan that I took his bust card. ESPECIALLY if he made a hand with the next card. On the other hand, the card I passed up by Standing might make his hand. You can't ever KNOW. That's why they call it Gambling. In the long run, Basic Strategy is better than Counting, especially in a Shoe game (with six or eight decks in the shoe, you can easily get a long run of all-high or all-low cards). If you are playing Pitch (with only one or two decks), a little basic observance of what has been dealt, combined with your Basic Strategy, is the superior way to play.
NOTE: In a Shoe Game, signal for a Hit by tapping the table with your fingers. In a Pitch Game, scraping your cards on the tabletop means Hit. If you signal the dealer to "hit," you can hit again, if you wish. If you "double down" (double your bet) you get only one hit. To "stand," wave your hand over your cards (in Pitch, tucking your cards under your bet means Stand). In a Shoe game, you may not touch your cards. In a Pitch game, you pick your cards up with one hand only. Turn them over to Double, scrape for a Hit, tuck them under your bet to Stand. Pairs may be split into two hands.
You can print these tables out or make your own smaller version...it IS permitted to take them with you to the Blackjack Table.
So Sorry. Tables lost in data transfer. The HardDrive crash didn't help, either.
Donny's MULTIPLE DECK (Shoe Game)
BASIC BLACKJACK STRATEGY
Many "Advice" books and booklets give different strategies for Single Deck and Double-Deck Pitch. I don't.
NOTE: Some casinos will not allow you to "double down" at Pitch, especially Single-Deck, unless you have 10 or 11. OK; I don't like it, but I can stand it. Some casinos instruct their dealers to reshuffle after EVERY HAND in Single-Deck Pitch, to eliminate the possibility of even the most rudimentary Counting technique. Some casinos instruct their dealers to place the "cut card" about halfway of the deck or decks, for the same reason. I don't play at those casinos. Casinos already have a tremendous advantage; flagrant greed pisses me off.
Donny's SINGLE & DOUBLE-DECK PITCH
BASIC BLACKJACK STRATEGY
What I have written here does not cover every point or facet of the game of Blackjack, but it is an excellent tutorial.
Don't gamble with money you can't afford to lose.
When you hit a streak of wins, increase your bets.
If you are on a losing streak, decrease your bets to table minimum.
You can't be a real winner by betting the same amount, hand after hand.
If the dealer is really kicking your ass, go to another table.
When you get ahead by a nice amount, GO HOME; casinos have no clocks, and they never close.
DICE (Craps): for John, my Teacher
- Although there were primitive versions of this game, Dice as we know it today is basically a New Orleans product, having evolved from a New York game which came from England. If you trace it back far enough, you will discover what the phrase "roll them bones" really means.
Dice players are the most superstitious bastards in the world, and somebody should tell them that it's bad luck to be superstitious. This is by far the rowdiest game in most casinos (maybe not in England), and it is certainly the game that keeps Pit Floor Supervisors most on their toes.
It is also the game most difficult to learn to deal well, because there is so much to know, the game moves so fast, and the players are such assholes. The lower-limit games are the worst, because players at the lower-limit games know less and are less genteel. Although I deal all casino games, Dice was my "first game." I will never, ever forget my first day doing it for real. I was petrified for at least five minutes. But dealing to real players using real cheques was easier than Dealer School, I quickly realized.
Dice Dealers have the most prestige amongst casino employees, because the game is so difficult and scary. Even after you are able to deal every game, you are always known as a "Dice Dealer." When you go to any casino for a job, the first question bosses ask, is "Can you deal Dice?"
Dice players and Blackjack players often argue about who has the better chance of winning. Remember this: winning at Blackjack depends upon HOW YOU PLAY the cards you are dealt. Winning at Dice depends upon HOW YOU PLACE YOUR BETS.
Donny's BIG EIGHT RULES OF DICE
1. Hug your money close until somebody gets on a roll, then drop it like it's hot. Keep your bets small until a shooter gets lucky and catches a long roll (keeps the dice a long time without a "7-Out"), then get aggressive. If the table is noisy and people are winning, bet more. Don't wait too long - hot dice and players "on a roll" are what you're waiting for...it's why you play this game. A "hot table" will not last a long time, because supervisors know many tricks for cooling them off. They may instruct dealers to speed up the game, or slow down the game; they may replace a dealer, or the whole team. If a Pit Boss changes the DICE when a table is hot, don't ever play at that casino again. I will not gamble at a casino where bosses "sweat the money."
2. Lay off the Proposition Bets; those are House Bets. The "Prop Bets" (Hard Ways, Hopping Numbers, Yo-Elevens, Horn Bets, etc., all the stuff right in front of the stick-man)...these are bets where the house has the greatest advantage. They pay big when they hit, but they don't hit often enough to make them worth betting. Don't be seduced by these bets.
3. Don't play The Field. It's a sucker bet. The Field is a one-roll bet where you win on any number that rolls except Five, Six, Seven and Eight. Not surprisingly, three of these roll most often...Six, Seven and Eight. Two and Twelve pay double; in some casinos they pay triple. Other field-numbers pay even money. You can get very lucky betting the Field occasionally; I've seen it happen many times. But consider the math: Two and Twelve pay big because there's only one way to hit them, Aces or Sixes on both dice. Seven, however, can be hit SIX WAYS: Ace-Six, Six-Ace, Deuce-Five, Five Deuce, Trey-Four, Four-Trey. Sixes and Eights can be hit five ways. Don't give me the idiot's argument that Ace-Six and Six-Ace are the same thing; they are not. There is an Ace and a Six on each die, see?
4. Bet the table minimum on the Pass Line, then take maximum Odds (to the amount you can afford, after the Point has been established. "Odds" are an increase in your Pass Line bet, placed behind the original bet after a point is established. Whereas the Pass Line bet pays even money if you win, Odds pay better than even money. You MAY NOT DECREASE OR PICK UP your Pass Line bet, but you can pick up your Odds bet anytime. If you do not understand this, your dealer can explain it further.
5. "Place" the inside numbers conservatively until somebody catches a good roll, then start Pressing. You can make a "Place Bet" on the Four, Five, Six, Eight, Nine and Ten (any, some, or all) and be paid every time they hit during a roll. Place Bets pay better than even money. Most casinos require that you have a Pass Line bet, in order to make Place Bets. The Inside Numbers are Five Six, Eight and Nine (Five and Nine are also Outside numbers). "Pressing" is increasing your bets (that's not an exact definition of Pressing, but it will suffice). You can take down or "turn off" your Place Bets anytime during a roll (sometimes you "feel" a Seven-Out coming...shooters get pissed off when other players do this, because they think you are jinxing them). If a shooter makes his point, your Place Bets are automatically Off on the next Come-Out roll, at most casinos (at some casinos, Place Bets are always On...there should be a sign notifying you of this). You can specify that they be On on the Come-Out roll, if you wish (I don't do it, because I am always hoping for the shooter's Seven to be on the come-out).
6. If the table is cold, leave. Or get on the Don't. A cold table is a quiet table where people are unhappy, not making any money, and bitching about it. The dice are "cold," possession passing rapidly from player to player, and nobody is "making a point." Go to another table, or bet the "Don't;" that is, with the house. I don't like the Don't. It's dreary, you have to give Odds to the House, and the shooter perceives that you are betting "against" him. Your dealer can tell you more.
7. If you were lucky enough to get in on a good roll, color up and go home when it's over. If someone has just had a long roll and you've made a good deal of money, don't play any more. When the lucky shooter (even if it's you) finally Sevens Out, tell the dealer "Color me up." He/She will exchange your cheques for higher denominations, so you have less to carry. Go to the Cage, cash in and go home. If you keep playing after you win, you will lose what you've won, and more. Remember, the casino stays open 24/7! Go see a movie or something. Read a book. Have a nice meal with somebody pleasant. Interact with a family member. Better yet, contact everyone you know and tell them about this website where you got all this great advice.
8. Bet a buck here and there for the dealers; they put up with a lot of crap for short money. Don't be a schmuck and stiff the dealers or cocktail waitresses; they will not forget it. If you are winning you will never notice that you've given them money; if you're losing, what difference does it make? Make a small bet for the dealers occasionally, and toss them something when you leave; it's the "class" way to play, and you won't believe how they'll remember you and kiss your ass from then on.
The above is good advice, succinct and concise, and intended for players who have some inkling of what I'm talking about. If you didn't understand it, consider this: Why learn this game? The Dice Tables are habit-forming and not always your best bet (I admit I rather like the game, myself). There is a little bit more to the game than what I have written here, but this is an excellent tutorial.
ROULETTE (Wheel): for Mike, my Teacher
- Here, you have a game designed specifically for masochists.
I bet a "pie slice" of thirteen contiguous numbers, about 1/3 of the wheel, as the numbers appear on the wheel (not on the layout). My numbers are 3, 5, 7, 11, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 30, 32 and 34. Using my system you can bet any amount of numbers and they can be any numbers, so long as they are contiguous on the wheel.
Another favorite group, a smaller one, is 0, 00, 1, 2, 27 and 28. This set is just for people who like Zero and Double-Zero (the other numbers are on either side of them).I increase my bets one unit per number until I hit; then I go back to one unit per number.
Of course, more timid players can bet Red or Black, Even or Odd, which pay even money. There are also bets for Corners, Splits, Streets, and What Have-You. There's no "excitement" in those bets for me; I prefer the 35-to 1 Straight-Up bets on the numbers.
Always tip the dealer when you hit, because dealers work for minimum wage and tips. If you don't tip, you will be a piece of crap and they will hate you and never hit your numbers. And don't stiff the waitress; that is so low-class.
Although Roulette Dealers are strictly prohibited from attempting to hit any certain number OR EVEN TO LOOK AT THE WHEEL AS THEY SPIN THE BALL, some of them CAN hit what they want to, and do. Casino bosses will tell you that Roulette Dealers do not possess this skill, and in Mississippi, mos
